Kawa Karpo Trekking
Kawa Karpo is one of the holiest mountains in Tibet and completing the Kora (loop) around its mountain ranges is said to purify all the negative karma of one lifetime. Whether you’re a Buddhist or not, walking the Kora is an epic adventure comparable to no other. The region is remote and wild, perched right on the border of Yunnan and Tibet. The Kora is a 12-stage trek across six high passes with altitudes ranging between 3,000m – 4,800m. While the Kora itself will last 14 days the trip will last about 19 days. This includes few days of preparation and acclimatization, some community visit and cultural activities in Shangri-la and Deqin, and one or two days of rest after the trekking. During the trip, nights will mainly be in tents, with the occasional local homestay.
Kawa Karpo is located near Gyalthang, a region traditionally part of Kham, Eastern Tibet and it today falls under Yunnan Province on the map. Kawa Karpo is one of the most the most sacred mountains for Tibetan Buddhism, and approximately 20,000 pilgrims visit it annually. Completing the Kora (loop of an arduous 240 km or 150 mi trek) around its mountain ranges is believed to purify all negative karma, prevent obstacles and generate good merits.
Meili Mountain Range (Meili Xueshan in Chinese) has over 20 peaks with permanent snow cover, including six peaks over 6,000 m (19,700 ft). The highest portion of the range is in the north, although Kawagebo is centrally located. The range rises high over the deeply incised valleys to the east and west, leading to dramatic relief. The range is highly affected by the monsoon, leading to especially unstable snow conditions. As of now, all of the significant peaks of the range are still unclimbed. Whether you’re a Buddhist or not, walking the Kora is an epic adventure comparable to no other.
